Winter can be magical, with its crisp, cold days. If we are lucky, walks in beautiful countryside beckon, wrapped in many layers and muffled with hats and scarves, followed by cosy nights in by the fire. But the cold weather, winter sun and warm fireside evenings can leave our skin and hair needing some protection and TLC. Read more for tips on keeping your skin and hair healthy this winter.
Ten tips to help keep your skin and hair in good condition during these cold winter months.
1. Keep hydrated
Water is one of the principal components of our bodies and makes up 50-70% of its weight. It has many crucial functions in our bodies, such as helping to eliminate waste, lubricating and cushioning joints, protecting sensitive tissues and improving the elasticity of our skin. Harsh weather and higher levels of indoor heating can lead to drier skin. A simple way to keep your skin hydrated is to make sure you drink enough water during the day. Why not also try warming herbal teas as part of your daily liquid intake? Our sister company Herbal Apothecary is home to The Whitby Tea Company, producer of high quality loose leaf teas made right here in Whitby, North Yorkshire.
2. Protect your skin from the sun
UV rays from the sun can be harmful to your skin in winter as well as summer, so make sure you’re careful about exposure to the sun. Most of our bodies are covered up in layers when it’s winter due to the cold, but our faces, necks and hands are often open to the elements all year-round. Consider using a sunscreen with moisturiser to combat the drying effects of the weather.
3. Chapped lips
Sore, dry lips can be a real problem in winter. There are several causes, including cold weather and dry air or wind, damage from the sun, dehydration or a lack of vitamins and minerals. Keep your lips protected and moisturised with a good quality lip balm which preferably includes a sunscreen, and make sure you’re drinking plenty, and eating a healthy, balanced diet, which includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Beeswax is excellent at locking in moisture and softening the skin, whilst propolis has many beneficial properties such as being anti-inflammatory and anti- bacterial.

5. Natural Oils
Add in natural oils like argan, rosehip and almond oil to your skincare regime in winter. These are rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, helping to lock in moisture and protect your skin from harsh weather.
6. Protect your liver
Your liver plays an essential role in eliminating toxins from the blood. Over winter and especially at Christmas many of us overindulge in excess sugars and fatty foods which the liver can struggle to metabolise. These then back up into the blood stream and are eliminated through the skin, which can cause problems such as inflammation, including spots and acne. To give your liver a helping hand, herbs like milk thistle, dandelion root and turmeric can all support healthy liver function, but before taking any herbal supplements please check for contraindications if you have any health conditions or interactions if you take any medications.
7. Cool showers
In the cold of winter, it’s tempting to take hot showers, but these can have a drying effect on your skin and scalp, stripping them of essential oils and leaving them flaky. Cool or lukewarm showers are preferable and patting with a soft towel rather than rubbing will also help your skin.
8. Keep Active
As the days are shorter and darker, it can be tempting to become less active, staying inside for longer by the fire, but keeping active and exercising regularly is very important during the winter months. Cardiovascular exercise can be beneficial in improving your circulatory flow generally, including to skin and scalp. This has the added benefit of flushing toxins from your system, helping to make your skin clearer and, healthier. Regular physical exercise can also increase self -esteem and reduce stress and anxiety.
9. Eat a healthy diet.
Eating a healthy diet can help to boost your immune system, which is very important during the winter months when there’s often more viruses around. If you do fall ill, a nutritious diet can also help to speed your recovery. Eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day, choose unsaturated oils and reduce your intake of salt and sugar. It can help to plan ahead so that you’re less tempted to eat unhealthily. Do your research to ensure you’re eating enough of the right foods to give you the range of vitamins and minerals that you need to keep your skin and hair healthy.
10. Look after your scalp and hair
Cold weather, hot showers and more time spent in the warm indoors can all dry your hair and scalp during the winter months. Choose hair products which contain ingredients that protect, moisturise, strengthen and soothe your hair and scalp.
These ingredients have the following beneficial properties for your scalp and hair:
Propolis
Propolis, a resinous substance produced by bees, is increasingly used in shampoos for its protective and restorative benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, which can nourish the scalp, strengthen hair, and reduce dandruff. Propolis also has antimicrobial properties that help to maintain a healthy scalp environment by preventing bacterial and fungal growth, potentially reducing scalp irritations and supporting hair growth.
Studies have shown that propolis has a stimulatory effect on hair growth and reduces damage to the hair follicle. Due to anti-inflammatory effects, propolis has the ability to promote the growth of cells that contribute to hair health, growth and increases the strength of the hair root. This makes it a valuable ingredient in shampoos designed for sensitive or dry scalps.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a popular ingredient in hair care shampoos due to its moisturizing and soothing properties. Aloe vera helps to balance the scalp's pH level, reduces dandruff with its natural anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties, and soothes scalp irritation. Aloe vera's ability to seal moisture into the hair cuticle also enhances shine and reduces frizz, making it beneficial for a wide range of hair types.
Peppermint and Rosemary essential oils
Peppermint and rosemary oils are valued in hair care products for their scalp-stimulating and strengthening properties. These oils increase blood circulation to the scalp, potentially promoting healthier hair growth and reducing hair thinning. Additionally, both these oils can help balance the scalp's natural oil production, making it suitable for both dry and oily hair types. Their refreshing scents adds a revitalizing feel to hair care routines.
